Publix Super Markets, Multiple

Moss has been involved with 10 Publix Supermarkets, totaling 640,000 square feet, throughout South Florida. Work performed for the various store locations has ranged from demolishing and redeveloping a 40-year-old store in Palm Beach to new construction of several stores within dense urban areas. Often new site drainage, lighting and landscaping were part of the scopes as well as considerations for adjacent retail areas. Each project was undertaken with significant planning for the active sites with regards to noise ordinances and restrictive work hours, and great importance was placed on maintaining and/or expediting schedules to minimize revenue loss and the demand of local customers.

Coral Way

This new 39,000-square-foot prototype building was built in an active shopping plaza that includes new site drainage, site lighting, landscaping, and asphalt pavement throughout the site. Moss worked through the preconstruction process to ensure all budget, schedule and logistical requirements were met prior to commencing field work.

Fort Lauderdale

This 28,000-square-foot project is located at 3500 SW Davie Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The construction of the this Publix was erected on the site of an existing store and consists of concrete strip and pad foundations, reinforced load bearing concrete block and steel frame structure. The exterior is a stucco/EIFS finish with decorative accent tile bands, and medallion stones accompanied with a built-up bitumen roofing system. The City of Fort Lauderdale is the controlling jurisdiction.

Mary Brickell Village

This new 31,000-square-foot grocery store sits within an existing parking structure adjacent to various office and residential hi-rise structures, a people mover and busy entertainment center known as Mary Brickell Village in downtown Miami. To accommodate the new Publix and future condominium tower that was to sit atop the garage, field crews were required to reinforce the existing foundation system with auger cast piles.

Miami Lakes

This project involved constructing a 54,000-square-foot replacement of the existing stand alone store. This project was especially demanding because it involved taking the one of the highest grossing stores in the Miami Division off-line.  The owner was extremely sensitive to revenue loss and the demand of the local customers. Publix moved the scheduled completion date up twice, shortening the construction time by over 2 months.  Despite all these demands, this project was completed nine weeks ahead of the original schedule.

North Miami

This project involved constructing a 39,000-square-foot replacement of the existing store that was situated between two existing retail spaces. This project was particularly challenging because it was directly affected by two hurricanes, Katrina and Wilma, during the course of construction. The staff had to overcome productivity losses, manpower shortages, material shortages and FPL power transformer delays. Despite the many set backs encountered from an active hurricane season, this project was completed ahead of the original schedule date.

Palm Beach

Publix Super Markets, Inc., a large grocery store chain in the southeast, selected Moss & Associates to demolish and redevelop its 40-year-old existing store located in the exclusive Town of Palm Beach. The store’s interior is similar to Publix’s 45,000-square-foot prototype floor plan; however, the exterior boasts elegant architectural elements such as acid-wash precast stone, terracotta-blend clay barrel roof tiles, aluminum-clad windows, French doors, wrought-iron grilles and scroll medallions. In addition, the landscape design features plush, mature hedges and a covered facade with walkways featuring Dominican coral pavers, architectural stone columns, decorative lights and chandeliers hanging below cypress wood ceilings. Ornamental gates were also utilized to screen customer visibility to the store’s daily delivery operations

Pompano

Moss built this grocery store within a densely populated urban community between existing retail centers and residential communities. In addition to constructing the new 46,000-square-foot facility, field crews were also required to restore and erect new canopies for the adjacent retail areas. Installation of new site drainage, site lighting, landscaping and asphalt pavement were also part of the scope of work.

All work was performed while the existing plaza remained in full operation to accommodate tenants. Moss addressed all items related to cost, schedule and logistics during the preconstruction planning phases and prior to commencing work in the field. The project represents one of eight projects that Moss has successfully constructed for the grocery store giant.
